With the recent deep snow falls and low temperatures over Christmas, my normal activities were temporarily suspended. One day, while enjoying a cup of tea and dreamily looking out the window, the wonder of the snow covered natural world suddenly jolted my imagination.
A ball of bird feed, attached to a garden tree, had attracted a hierarchy of birds. Watching the birds started me thinking about human nature where similar hierarchies are very much in evidence. In our own world the “small birds” are the weakest and disadvantaged in society. The “big birds” are the powerful and money hungry, and those able and willing to manipulate the “system” to maximise their personal or group advantage.
Fortunately, art can be created and enjoyed by all humans without recourse to any hierarchy. Although some artists inevitably ‘make it’ while others don’t, art is first and foremost about individual expression. Whether it is good or bad, popular or widely disliked, it is all art and it all comes from the same impulse to create.
Artists throughout history have always managed to survive the restrictions and manipulations of governments, art markets and, sad to say, even the negativity of artist controlled establishments. The current “boom and bust” like the cold weather here in Ireland, is but a temporary aberration.
Art is an individual and personal expression... and thereby lays its strength.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our friends and clients!
