Blog: Innovation and Invention

February 8, 2008

After a prolonged period of experimenting with acrylic paints, I have recently returned to painting with pen & watercolours.

Pen & watercolour paintings were my main focus over a decade ago and the compact gear is very convenient when travelling. However, I now find I require strong, magnified reading spectacles when drawing fine lines and applying very small areas of watercolour. It is a nice change from palette knife and big brush painting but quite time consuming.

I have also been spending a lot of time on inventive thought, creating numerous sketch drawings for a new form of flying machine. The internet is a goldmine of information – I have spent hours on the internet, reading up on gyroscopes, linear motors, rocket propulsion, jet engines, solar cells, gravity, space time etc. etc.

I give the excuse that artists (most famously Leonardo da Vinci) have a history of invention. Physicists use mathematical formula to express new concepts... an artist can visualise!

At least the inventive exercise gives me a great source of new images for future paintings.
