Artists and Athletes

The Olympics are over and my thoughts turn to the incredible single minded dedication to training of each of the competitors. The difference between a medal winner and a “loser” may only be a micro second, or a chance event in the race, yet society places winners on a pedestal and tends to ignore the efforts of the “loser”. The money and sponsorship only follows winners. There has to be something wrong here – perhaps it’s just a reflection of human nature and commercialism?

To my way of thinking it is much more individually impressive when a competitor achieves a place to compete in the Olympic Games when all the odds are stacked against them. Surely it is far easier for a competitor to win gold when the national training facilities of the competing country are advanced and concentrate on the event? The individual winner can then just be a highly selected pawn to national interests.

The same applies to art. There are so many very good but commercially unsuccessful artists out there. It is partly a question of being in the right place at the right time. The money, hype and sponsorship only ever follow a selected few.

I better get back to painting and train to win gold………..!
